COMMERCIAL PLANT PROCUREMENT

Buying plants for commercial production

Plan your batches, compare suppliers in Québec and Canada, and prepare the order and its arrival.

Compare six bulk suppliers

Start with Québec, then compare other Canadian options by plant format and purchasing terms. Open a supplier’s details for catalogue examples and official links.

Official sources consulted October 12, 2026. Catalogue examples and purchasing terms are not live stock or delivery promises. A price tier is not necessarily a minimum order. Confirm each quote.

PRODUCTION BUYING PATH

Prepare a commercial order

Start with the planting plan. Then compare quotes using the same cultivars, quantities, formats and delivery requirements.

  1. Before requesting a quote. Clarify cultivar choices, pollination partners, quantities and planting readiness.
  2. Before confirming the order. Request written details of plant identity, provenance, batches, total cost, delivery and replacement terms; clarify how any proposed substitution would be approved.
  3. On arrival. Check quantities, labels and plant condition. Photograph any issues and keep batch records with the orchard plan.

Fix the planting plan before requesting prices

Start with the market, harvest method and field conditions. Record exact cultivar names and pollination partners, then calculate quantities from your planting plan.

Describe your batches and plant formats

Trial block

Order enough to compare candidates under the same conditions. Keep each cultivar and batch identified; do not expand on a single season’s results.

Production block

Specify quantities by cultivar, compatible partners and any staged delivery. Compare suppliers using identical specifications.

Expansion or contract growing

Confirm propagation capacity, reservation terms and the delivery window before relying on a large future batch.

Compare what you will actually receive

Plugs / liners
Ask whether further growing or potting is required. Specify tray size, root development and hardening.
Bare root
Confirm the lifting and delivery window, packaging and storage instructions before planting.
Potted plants
Specify container volume, plant height and root quality. Pot volume alone does not establish plant quality.

Request comparable quotes

Send the same specification to each supplier so that differences are visible.

  1. Full cultivar name, quantity, format, size and acceptable delivery window.
  2. Minimum per cultivar, tray and total order; provenance and lot identification.
  3. Plant prices, packaging, freight, taxes, payment schedule and quote expiry.
  4. Written approval for substitutions; procedures and deadlines for damaged, missing or mislabelled plants.

Compare the delivered batch cost and the work needed to establish it. A cheaper liner may require additional growing time, irrigation and labour.

Prepare a quote request

Replace the bracketed fields before copying. Nothing is sent from this page; edits are not saved when you leave.

Prepare for arrival and keep batch records

Before delivery

Confirm the arrival date, unloading arrangements and supplier-specific storage and watering instructions. Have labels and your field map ready.

On arrival

Count plants by cultivar and batch. Compare labels with the order; photograph visible damage and notify the supplier within its stated deadline.

At planting

Record the date, supplier, batch, cultivar and row location. Track establishment and replacements separately to keep later comparisons meaningful.

Source unusual cultivars as a separate trial

For a request such as Happy Giant, Larissa / Wojtek, Keiko or Giant’s Heart, ask for exact label identity, documented provenance, a production schedule and the proposed pollination partner. Keep the trial separate from the main order.

A catalogue or breeder record is a lead, not proof of a currently available batch.

Sources and further reading

Each supplier card links to its official catalogue and purchasing information. Use breeder or trial sources for horticultural decisions; a supplier catalogue primarily documents what it offers.
